Internal PDP Crisis Deepens as Factional Leaders Challenge Wike Over Threat to Shut Down Party Offices
The internal crisis rocking Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has taken a dramatic turn as leaders of a rival faction openly confronted the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, daring him to carry out his threat to shut down their offices in Abuja.
The heated confrontation marks another chapter in the escalating battle for control of the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections, with rival camps exchanging accusations, court interpretations, and political threats.
Wike’s Warning Sparks Fresh Tension
The latest dispute erupted after Wike warned that any faction attempting to operate what he described as an “illegal” PDP secretariat or office in the Federal Capital Territory would face immediate closure by authorities.
During a media briefing in Abuja, the former Rivers State governor insisted that only the leadership recognised by court rulings has the authority to operate official party structures.
Wike challenged the rival faction led by senior PDP figures aligned with former Minister Taminu Turaki and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to open offices and bank accounts in the party’s name if they truly believed they controlled the PDP structure.
According to Wike, any attempt to establish parallel structures in Abuja would amount to illegality and a breach of public order.
“Come and Shut It Down If You Can”
In a swift reaction, leaders of the Turaki-led faction fired back at the FCT minister, accusing him of attempting to intimidate opposition figures and hijack the party machinery.
A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, who serves as an aide to Turaki, publicly challenged Wike during a television appearance.
He declared that the faction was not afraid of Wike’s threats and insisted they would continue operating despite intimidation.
The faction bluntly told the minister to “come and shut down our office if you can,” signaling that the internal feud has now moved beyond political disagreements into open confrontation.
PDP Leadership Battle Intensifies
The ongoing conflict stems from disagreements surrounding the PDP’s controversial convention and the emergence of parallel leadership structures within the party.
One camp, reportedly backed by Governors Makinde and Bala Mohammed, insists that the convention held in Ibadan produced a legitimate leadership under Turaki.
Meanwhile, Wike and his allies maintain that court decisions recognize a different leadership arrangement and reject the legitimacy of the rival faction.
The disagreement has triggered multiple confrontations at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja in recent months, with security operatives occasionally intervening to prevent violence.
At one point, rival supporters clashed physically while party leaders accused each other of bringing thugs to party meetings.
Fear of PDP Collapse Ahead of 2027
Political observers say the worsening internal division could seriously weaken the PDP’s ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.
Several party elders have already warned that the prolonged power struggle risks destroying the PDP from within.
Some critics within the party have accused Wike of acting as a “political undertaker” bent on destabilizing the opposition, while his supporters insist he is merely enforcing constitutional order and court judgments.
The deepening crisis has also exposed widening cracks among PDP governors, former ministers, and national officers, raising concerns about the party’s unity and future direction.

As tensions continue to rise, pressure is mounting on senior party stakeholders to intervene before the situation spirals completely out of control.
Analysts believe the dispute could eventually end up in prolonged legal battles, further weakening the PDP’s national structure.
