CCTV Footage Captures Suspected Transformer Vandal in Ondo Community
Residents of Omonira community in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area, have expressed concern after a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera reportedly captured a man tampering with an electricity transformer in the early hours of Saturday, May 10, 2026.
According to reports from the community, the incident occurred at about 2:02 a.m. when the unidentified man was seen approaching the transformer installation located within the neighborhood. The footage, which has since circulated among residents, allegedly shows the suspect attempting to interfere with components of the power facility under the cover of darkness.
Community members said the suspicious activity has heightened fears over increasing cases of vandalism and attacks on public infrastructure across parts of Ondo State. Residents noted that electricity facilities in several riverine communities have faced repeated threats from vandals seeking to steal cables, transformer oil, and other electrical materials.
A local resident who spoke on the development said the community was shocked after reviewing the CCTV footage.
“This could have thrown the entire area into darkness if the transformer had been damaged. People are worried because these acts affect businesses, security, and daily life,” the resident said.
The transformer reportedly serves several households and small businesses in the Omonira area, making it a critical source of electricity for the community.
Following the incident, residents called on security agencies and relevant electricity authorities to strengthen surveillance around public power installations to prevent future attacks. Some youths in the community were also said to have intensified local vigilante patrols around sensitive infrastructure.
Authorities had yet to officially confirm whether any arrest had been made as of the time of filing this report. However, community leaders urged anyone with useful information regarding the suspect’s identity to report to law enforcement agencies.
Incidents involving vandalism of electricity infrastructure have continued to pose major challenges in many parts of Nigeria, often leading to prolonged blackouts and costly repairs for affected communities.
