EBONYI PDP INSISTS GOVERNORSHIP TICKET MUST REMAIN IN EBONYI NORTH, REJECTS WIKE CAMP CRITICISM


The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has reaffirmed its long-standing zoning arrangement for the 2027 governorship election, insisting that the party’s ticket must remain in Ebonyi North Senatorial District. The state chapter also dismissed recent criticisms linked to loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing such remarks as “malicious, misleading, and completely unfounded.”


The development highlights growing internal tensions within the party as it begins early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, with zoning once again emerging as a central political fault line in Ebonyi State.



ZONING IS “NON-NEGOTIABLE” — PDP


In a strongly worded statement released by the party’s spokesperson, Richard Nwafor, the Ebonyi PDP maintained that its zoning formula remains sacrosanct and cannot be altered by any internal or external pressure group.


According to the statement, the governorship ticket has been traditionally rotated among the three senatorial districts in the state as part of a power-sharing arrangement designed to ensure equity, inclusion, and political stability.


“The zoning arrangement of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi State is not negotiable. It is rooted in fairness, justice, and political balance,” the statement read.


The party further argued that since 1999, zoning has played a critical role in shaping its governorship candidacy decisions, helping to maintain internal cohesion and prevent prolonged political marginalisation of any region within the state.


DEFENCE OF STATE LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE


The statement also threw its weight behind the leadership of the state party chairman, Onyemaechi Nwele, describing the party structure as legitimate and fully empowered to enforce zoning agreements.


It insisted that attempts to question or delegitimise the current leadership were distractions engineered to destabilise the party ahead of the 2027 election cycle.


“The leadership of the PDP in Ebonyi State under Onyemaechi Nwele has both moral and organisational authority to guide the party’s internal processes, including zoning,” the statement added.


SUPPORT FOR NATIONAL LEADERSHIP


On the national front, the Ebonyi PDP also reaffirmed its support for the party’s interim leadership led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), commending efforts to reposition the party after internal disagreements at the national level.


The state chapter urged members to remain focused and avoid distractions, warning against what it described as “political jobbers” allegedly working to weaken the party from within.


“We stand firmly with the interim national leadership and urge all members to respect party discipline and unity,” the statement noted.


ALLEGATIONS OF INTERNAL SABOTAGE


The Ebonyi PDP also levelled accusations against unnamed individuals allegedly aligned with political interests linked to Wike’s camp, claiming they were attempting to undermine the party’s zoning consensus and disrupt internal harmony.


While no specific names were mentioned beyond general references, the statement suggested that such elements were actively lobbying to alter the agreed zoning formula ahead of 2027.


Political observers note that these tensions reflect broader national disputes within the PDP, where disagreements over leadership direction and zoning arrangements have continued to surface.
