BREAKING: Nigerian Government Files 13-Count Treason Charge Against Alleged Coup Plotters


The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally filed a 13-count criminal charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against a group of individuals accused of plotting a coup aimed at overthrowing the administration of President Bola Tinubu.



According to court filings, the accused persons include a retired Major-General, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector, and three other individuals alleged to have been involved in the purported conspiracy. The charges border on treason and other related national security offences.


Security sources revealed that the suspects were arrested following intelligence-led investigations conducted by Nigerian security agencies, which reportedly uncovered a coordinated plan to violently disrupt the democratic government. Authorities say the investigation has now been concluded, leading to the formal arraignment of the suspects.


The case has been assigned to the Federal High Court in Abuja, where proceedings are expected to begin in the coming days. Court officials have yet to announce a specific hearing date.


Government prosecutors allege that the accused individuals were part of a broader network that planned actions capable of destabilising the country’s democratic structure. However, the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and they are expected to enter their pleas when the trial begins.
